Thanks for taking the time to talk with me. There’s something we need to discuss. I appointed you as team leader because you are the best qualified for the job. You know what those under you are supposed to do and it’s your job to ensure it gets done.

What I’m seeing, however is that you’re not providing team members with enough feedback and coaching. If there’s something wrong they need to know so they can fix it, otherwise they’re just going to perpetuate the same mistakes. I need you to tell them what they’re doing right, as well as what they can improve on, so that they can advance and grow. The better feedback you give them, the more it will enhance the quality of their work for the company.

Note: Ensure the team leader understands exactly what it means to be a team leader, that they’re now in charge of the others on the team. Not to say they’re better than their new subordinates, but that they’ve been with the job long enough to understand what each faction brings to the overall picture of the company, and how to get the best from each team member.

These team members look to you for guidance and support in their work, and we need to make that happen, otherwise the team falls apart. Now, I know I can count on you to get the job done, so show me you can help others get the job done as well.

Note: A team leader that doesn’t understand what it means, or is just new to the position, can make a lot of mistakes at first. Encourage, rather than discourage. Make them see a greater value in themselves so they can take that attitude and show it to the other employees.
