Coaching Cue Cards are designed to help jumpstart conversations that you may need to have with your employees. Modify as needed based on your situation.

Hi ____________, do you have a moment to talk? First off, I'd like to say that your work has been very good lately. You're definitely a hard worker and an asset to the team.

There are a few areas, however, we may need to work on improving, and I'd like us to have a quick chat. See, my job is to help you put forth your best effort. It’s possible that you may sometimes need a bit longer to get used to new tasks, and that is totally fine. I see the effort you put into your work and I understand if it takes you a little extra time to figure things out. I ask that you please let me know whenever I can help with anything, and please know the whole team is here to help you succeed. How does that sound?

Note: The ADA has been put in place to prevent workplace discrimination, so be very careful how you approach this. This interaction should not be meant to punish, but to offer reasonable accommodations if required.

Unless you are licensed and in a field to make reliable diagnoses, it isn't your place to guess someone's disability if it's not obvious (e.g. a wheelchair or the need for a seeing-eye dog). It's also not your place to out someone's disability to their co-workers, so this interaction should be held in private. Focus on those areas of difficulty instead, and how to help alleviate them. Above all else, make clear that effort and positivity are rewarded, and don’t allow your personal frustrations to turn toxic when this employee meets certain limitations in their work, causing the occasional setback.
