Coaching Cue Cards are designed to help jumpstart conversations that you may need to have with your employees. Modify as needed based on your situation.

Note: If an employee is planning on leaving and you’re unwilling to negotiate pay, time off, or benefits, keeping the employee can be difficult to do. That isn’t to say it’s not possible and it should not be the first avenue you consider. Try to discern if the employee is leaving due to job dissatisfaction, or squabbles with some of the other employees. Be personal to make them feel more a part of the “family”:

Hi _____________ , how are you today? Listen, I’ve picked up clues that you may be about to leave the company and I wanted to say that I’d be sorry to see you go.

Note: Explain accomplishments of the employee or achievements the employee helped the company to earn. Make the employee feel a part of something bigger than them.

Without your help these past few years, I don’t know where we would be. I’d like to ask you, is there anything going on around here that you feel needs to be changed? How could we work together to make this a better workplace for you?

Note: Make the employee’s opinion a priority. If you don’t want to lose them, let them voice their concerns and opinions and see if you can’t come together to find a solution. This may keep the employee around longer than they expected.
