Coaching Cue Cards are designed to help jumpstart conversations that you may need to have with your employees. Modify as needed based on your situation.

Note: This could be happening for a number of reasons. It may be an issue of respect, or the employee may feel ignored, or it could just be that the chain of command is not clear. Whatever the reason may be, this employee needs to respect, and report to, the manager that is directly above him or her. If the employee continues to ignore the organizational structure of the company, it will reflect badly on both the employee and the manager, so this should be dealt with right away.

Hi _____________ , can we talk for a minute?

I noticed you’ve been reporting issues to upper management. I want you to know that my door is always open to you and I want you to feel like you’re being heard. I wanted to give you a chance to talk to me about anything at work that might be concerning you.

As your immediate supervisor, you need to come to me with any issues, and if we can’t resolve them together, I can take them to management for you. You’re an excellent employee, and it’s important to me that you feel heard and understood, but we have to follow the proper protocol.
