Hi _____________ , thanks for seeing me. I heard you feel that you’re having an issue with your pay rate.
Note: Allow the employee to address their concerns about their rate of pay. Attempt to relate to their point of view without giving anything away. If you’re prepared to offer a raise, bonus, or incentive, present it to the employee. If not, be prepared to discuss research on the current market value of the position the employee is filling and if/how their current pay aligns with that research.
If offering a raise, bonus, or incentive:
We did some additional research and have found there may be room for a raise (bonus, or incentive). Based on the work you are currently doing and the going market rate, we can offer _____________. Management believes this is a fair and accurate rate and we hope this addresses your concerns. Do you have any questions?
If NOT offering a raise, bonus, or incentive:
I can understand why you feel this way. We’ve all felt underpaid at some point in our career. Right now your earnings reflect the current market price for your position.
If you find that this figure changes then bring it to our attention. Until then, you applied for this position with this rate of pay. If you feel you have the skills for another position with a higher salary, by all means, apply for it. We want nothing more than to see you succeed in this company. I hope I’ve addressed your concerns about this. If not, are there any last questions?
Note: Pay rates are a very tricky subject and it’s the employers’ job to know the standard rates of pay for the positions they have filled. If the rate of pay offered is lower than the current market, there could be employees who are justified in their concerns.
